Situated at an elevation of 195 meters above sea level, Dimapur is a unique blend of the ancient with the modern. What was once the capital of the mighty Kachari tribe, Dimapur derives its name from Hidimbaapur, from the Mahabharata era and now an important commercial hub of Nagaland. Reminiscences of the glorious days of the Kachari kingdom from the 13th century can be visible in the ruins of temples, embankments and baths and such ancient relics lie scattered in the heart of this commercial centre.

Ruzaphema on the Dimapur-Kohima road is just five kilometers away and another attraction of Dimapur. Wide range of handloom, cane and bamboo products and artifacts of the different tribes-- exquisite in their style--are shoppers’ delight in the souvenir stalls. Garments—ethnic and modern—await tourists in the bustling colourful markets of Ruzaphema—an ideal haunt for leisurely strolls and recreation. Dimapur wears a festive look during Christmas till the New Year eve. For the food hunters… well, pork is the flavor of all seasons and ethnic food topping every menu!

The Intangki Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Asian elephants and many other endangered animal and bird species. It is about 37 kilometers from Dimapur.

The North East Zone Cultural Centre Museum showcases the different cultural heritages of the northeastern people and is an interesting place for tourists.

Dimapur stands on the National Highway No. 39 that connects Nagaland to the other Northeastern states -- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. Nagaland is connected by Air network with the other parts of the country and Dimapur happens to be the only airport of the state.

3. By road : NH-36 and NH-39 connects Dimapur to the rest of the country. Kohima the capital of the State, district headquarters, important towns and villages are connected to Dimapur by the Nagaland State Transport, Taxis and other mode of conveyances.
